New Supra vs. 2019 mustang GT

Kinja'd!!!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Kinja'd!!!

So, formatting, Kinja doesn’t allow comparison lists to be side by side (at least I couldn’t figure this out). So.. Supra will be on left, Mustang on right. Supra we will be comparing the straight six version that has been announced

Horsepower: 335 vs. 460

Seating: 2 vs. 4

Transmission: automatic only vs both

0-60: 4.1 vs. “under four seconds”

Base Price: $49,990 vs. $35,355

Now, the supra gets a bmw interior, which I believe will be super nice (the 7 series BMW was the nicest I’ve ever sat in) but you can get the GT in whatever flavor you want, and still have money to buy an old celica supra. Will the supra handle better on a track? Probably. Will I ever take it on a track? Fuck no! and I am guessing an optioned-up supra will enter GT350 territory, where questionable performance differences disappear in a puff of smoke.

W hy should I be interested again?

Because not everything comes down to a cost-benefit analysis. Sometimes you go "I like that, I think it's worth the price, don't care about other options".

Ah, but the Supra has Toyota reliability.

I had the same comparison when the FRS/BRZ came out. I drove both twins and a ‘13 GT. I had x plan pricing at the time which made a base GT in grabber blue with the track pack just a smidge more than the FRS, after all incentives. I was within a hair of ordering a ‘14 GT when they announced the ‘15 was going to have IRS. Then after much waffling , I decided to keep saving.

If I was going to buy a new car in that price range today, I would have the GT every day of the week and twice on Tuesday. For 50k, you can get the level 2 performance pack and the extra premium interior. The regular premium interior is a legitimately nice place to be. And with the level 2 performance pack, I guarantee it would eat a supra on the track.

Some people will just like the Supra, s ome people are Toyota fans (though this isn’t really a Toyota), some people are fans of Japanese cars (though this really isn’t Japanese ) and s ome people will simply never buy American and especially not an American performance car.

I think we are going to have a serious. price differential there. I guess toyota is targeting a different demographic. I wonder why they are calling it a supra then?

Probably. I don't care about the name, I want to know what it does. Much like I love the Mustang, but I don't like the newest ones due to the way that what feels like should be an everyman car is so extremely expensive here in Canada (at least, for what I think a Mustang should cost). Knowing that there's more cool options out there is good for us.

Mustang all day errday because ‘Murrrican 5.0 Coyote as Jesus himself had meant it to be.

And it will sound better any day than the B58 ever could

manual option is a plus. But to get under 4 second(3.9) 0 to 60 you have to get the Auto and it’s with launch control, and you need to step up to one of the packages/options .

You have to put up with shitty interior on the lower trims

And I have read about problems with both the manuals and the 10 speed auto.

I agree with you on the GT - but I’d have to drive both to see if the Supra had more refinement or better balance to justify the price. But on paper it’s no contest- and we are way beyond the point where pony cars are rough and tumble rattle traps- they’re way more refined, and thank God the Mustang has IRS.

That said, there WILL be people who buy a Supra for Toyota reliability. Most of the public just doesn’t pay attention like we do.

On the plus side, the Supra's paint will probably remain adhered to its metal for longer than 3 or 4 years. Not sure what that's worth.

I think the reason to buy the Supra over the Mustang is just because you like the way it looks better than the Ford. And if you’ve got the money, then that’s a good enough reason. Also, you won’t see nearly as many of them on the road, and some lots of people, that’s compelling.

From a numbers standpoint, Mustang takes the win.

I figure that, for the majority of us Oppos, we understand that cars are not necessarily a rational or logical purchase since different cars draw different emotions.

I don’t think either car is pretty but I’d probably still go with the Toyota. In a period where popular cars are homogeneous in design, I like weird cars that stand out a bit: the Type-R is pretty horrendous with all those fake grilles but I love how stupid and ostentatious it is; I like the new design for the Kia Soul because, despite being labelled a crossover, I still think it’s a cubical hatchback and it’s just plain weird.

The Mustang does have it’s own look compared to other cars, but I’m guessing it’s the fact that the design of the car hasn’t really changed tremendously since this kind of bodystyle came out in 2005. Don’t get me wrong, the 5th gen and 6th gen are very different but it wasn’t quite the massive change (which I supported) when they first introduced the 5th gen with that old-school-made-modern kind of design.

That said, if I had to choose between the Supra and the Boss 302 Laguna Seca model they made a few years back, I’d go with the latter despite how I feel about the looks.

If none of this made sense at all, then it comes back to my original point about cars not necessarily being a rational or logical purchase for enthusiasts.

To throw another wrench into the equation, you can have your  Ford dealer install this:

Kinja'd!!!

For under $10k installed you’ve got 700 hp and your warranty intact. So for around the cost of the I6 Supra you’re making over twice the power.

Maybe it will come with a roll hoop like the original, so you can use it on the track. A 700+ hp convertible track ‘ Stang with no back seats sounds like a great way to spend $80k.
